Not my finest moment, but hey, we learn.So, red blood cells – let’s start there. These are your main oxygen carriers. Lovely little biconcave discs, right? That shape isn’t just for style; it gives them a higher surface area-to-volume ratio, which helps with absorbing and releasing oxygen. A key point: they have no nucleus. Sometimes I get students who mix that up—no, they haven't just lost it! It’s an adaptation so they can pack in more haemoglobin, which itself contains iron. Oxygen binds to the iron, travels around your body, and is released where it’s needed most.Then we’ve got your white blood cells. Now, they’re the defenders—sort of like your immune system’s little soldiers. Two types mainly: lymphocytes and phagocytes. Lymphocytes are picky, making specific antibodies, and phagocytes—you know, like Pac-Man—they gobble up the invading microbes, literally eating them alive. Or, well, digesting them, technically.Platelets, don’t forget those. They’re not cell fragments, not air bubbles, like I thought years ago. Their main job is clotting—converting fibrinogen to fibrin, creating a sort of net to trap blood, stop bleeding, and form a scab. Exam tip for you: if you see 'fibrinogen to fibrin', think platelets every time.And last but not least, plasma—the straw-coloured fluid. It’s not just water; it’s the main transport medium, carrying around your cells, nutrients, hormones, carbon dioxide, and waste products like urea. It’s easy to overlook, but without plasma, none of the other components would get where they need to go.Don’t forget, if you dump red blood cells into pure water, you'll get cell lysis—they burst, which is, uh, not ideal! And that’s the basic breakdown, but let’s carry those components forward as we look at how blood moves around the body.So, all these fancy blood components need a delivery system, right? Enter blood vessels and the big boss—the heart. Now, can you tell an artery from a vein if you’re just looking at a cross-section? Key exam question there. Arteries have a thick wall made of muscle and elastic fibres, so they can withstand and stretch under the high pressure from blood being pumped out of the heart. Their lumens are small, which keeps pressure up, and—crucially—no valves.Now, veins, they're the opposite. Thinner walls, much less muscle, much less pressure, so they compensate by having a larger lumen—kind of like, uh, a motorway with fewer traffic jams. Here’s the kicker: veins do have valves, and those valves keep the blood moving back towards the heart, stopping it from pooling around your ankles. Capillaries are the tiny connectors—one cell thick, so substances like glucose and oxygen can diffuse in and out fast. That thin wall’s key for exchange.Let’s follow the blood’s journey: out from the left ventricle through the aorta to the body, returning via the vena cava into the right atrium, then off to the lungs through the pulmonary artery. Lungs, oxygen in, CO2 out, then back to the left atrium via the pulmonary vein, and the whole cycle repeats. It’s called double circulation because the blood passes through the heart twice for every circuit of the body—once for the lungs, once for the body.Oh, and I almost forgot—have you ever heard a heart murmur? Sometimes it’s because the valves aren’t shutting properly, so blood leaks the wrong way. I remember in class we did this pulse experiment—everyone measuring how fast they recovered after sprinting around the gym. I ran with them, thinking I’d be grand, but—honest truth—my pulse took longer to come back down than some of the students! Goes to show the fitter you are, the faster your recovery. Regular exercise really does strengthen your heart muscle, makes it more efficient at pumping blood, and lowers your resting heart rate.So, keep these differences between arteries, veins, and capillaries straight—you’ll need that for both your exams and your own health knowledge, honestly.Now, let’s talk about what happens when things go wrong. Cardiovascular diseases are mostly about blockages—usually from a build-up of cholesterol. Too much fatty food, not enough exercise, smoking, or stress, and you start getting deposits in your arteries. Narrowed arteries mean less oxygen and glucose for your cells, and if the blockage is in a coronary artery, blood flow to part of the heart muscle is cut off. The cells can’t respire, so they die, and that’s a heart attack. If it’s in the brain, it’s a stroke—same mechanism, just different area.Treatments, though, are clever. Angioplasty is where they thread a fine tube with a balloon into the blocked artery, inflate it, and then often leave a stent—a metal cage—to keep the vessel wide open. I had a family friend who went through this; before, walking to the shop was tough, but after angioplasty and a stent, and a bit of encouragement from me (he’ll tell you I nagged him), he started doing daily walks and now swears he feels ten years younger.Medications like statins help lower cholesterol, making arteries less likely to get blocked in the first place, and aspirin thins the blood, so it’s less likely to stick and clot.
